CRIF hosts leading centre-right presidential candidate

François Fillon, presidential candidate of France’s centre-right Republican party was hosted by the CRIF umbrella organisation of French Jews this week.

Fillon, who was warmly welcomed at the conference, stated that he believed that Israel should be defended by France, “because it is a democratic state.”

The candidate spoke widely about his policies, notably in the field of the preservation of French national identity.

He also apologised for a recent antisemitic cartoon of one of his rivals for the presidency, Emmanuel Macron, which had been published by his party.

Macron, running as a centrist candidate for the En Marche movement, is scheduled to speak at a CRIF gathering on March 22.
