An inverted Nazi salute known as “Quenelle” and popularised by anti-Semitic comedian Dieudonné is becoming increasingly mainstream in France as a sign of opposition to “the global financial elite”.

Which begs the question, why do so many people do it outside synagogues, standing next to well-known Jews, at Auschwitz and at Israeli sites?
