Jewish family violently attacked near Paris

A Jewish couple and their son were violently attacked and robbed at their home in Livry-Gargan, north-east of Paris, on Thursday night.

The attack was described as antisemitic and condemned by Jewish organisations and the Ministry of the Interior.

An investigation has been opened for breaking and entering, robbery and extortion by violence with the religious origin of the victims a motivating factor.

According to initial facts, the motivation for this cowardly act appears to be the directly linked to the religion of the victims, "Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said in a statement on Sunday." Everything will be put in place to identify and arrest the perpetrators of this horrible attack", Collomb added while sending his "deep support to the family and to the leaders of French Jewish institutions."

Among the victims of the attack was Roger Pinto, 78, president of Siona, an organisation which describes itself "in defence of the Jewish People and the State of Israel. "

In a statement, the CRIF umbrella organisation of French Jews, the country’s EJC affiliate, condemned the attack.

CRIF President Francis Kalifat said the attack "is proof, if it were still needed, that the Jews of France are particularly threatened on the streets and recently, even in their own homes, which is even more worrying."
